A pioneering virtual-reality simulator funded by The Walton Centre Charity has now been used for more than 1,000 brain and spinal surgery training sessions—an incredible milestone made possible by our supporters.

Purchased by the Charity in 2022 following a fundraising campaign launched at the Jan Fairclough Ball, the Neuro VR simulator enables trainee surgeons and medical students to practise complex procedures safely before entering an operating theatre.

High-definition graphics, touch-sensitive feedback and immersive sound help learners build their skills, knowledge and confidence. The technology has supported resident neurosurgeons, core surgical trainees and students from the University of Liverpool, Edge Hill University and beyond.

Consultant Neurosurgeon Mr Nick Carleton-Bland said simulation makes training safer and more effective, while helping learners understand procedures more deeply.

The programme also won the Excellence in Education and Training Award at the 2024 NHS Parliamentary Awards.
