Rachel and I have decided to take up a challenge this month to raise funds for the Home from Home relatives accommodation at The Walton Centre in Liverpool. Each April the Walton Centre run the 11 mile sponsored Hope Mountain Hike fundraising event. Sadly, for the second year running, the event has had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus situation and the charity are losing out on much needed funds they need to keep the accommodation running. The Walton Centre have instead launched a 'virtual' Hope Mountain Hike fundraiser this year. As 11 miles seemed a bit too easy (!!), especially if we weren't hiking up a mountain, we have instead come up with our own challenge - for me to cycle 200 miles and Rachel to walk 100 miles in April.

We want to raise funds for the charity for our Dad who passed away at The Walton Centre in 2016 after suffering a brain haemorrhage. Both of us used the Home from Home accomodation when Dad was in the critical care unit there in the weeks before his death. Even though we live just down the motorway from the hospital his situation was changing so much from minute to minute that it was impossible to think of going home and wasting time driving back to the hospital if we needed to be with him in an instant. The accommodation meant that we could be close to him and also get some rest knowing if things changed we were only across a car park rather than half an hour's drive away.

We also met people whose relatives had been brought to the critical care unit at the hospital from other parts of the country who really were not in a position to return to their homes hours away from their relatives when they were so poorly. The Home from Home accommodation was a lifeline for them and took away the stress of having to find their own accommodation whilst they had to deal with the pain of having to see their loved ones in such a desperate situation.

It costs £20 to provide a one night stay at the Home from Home accommodation for a family of someone receiving critical care at the Walton Centre. We would be so grateful for any amount you are able to donate to this wonderful cause.

Thank you for your kindness,
Julia and Rachel xx
